THE CONCEPT BEHIND everybody.co.uk.

This site is based on and around the concept that all the hotels, airlines and other places and services listed herein can be used by anyone, able bodied or disabled. A further difference between this and other disability related hotel directories is that it lists only mainstream hotels, and not those owned by disability organisations and aimed more specifically towards people with disabilities. Hence this site is aimed at everybody but particularly families that include one or more people with disabilities.

HOW TO USE EVERYBODY'S HOTEL DIRECTORY.

EVERYBODY'S Hotel Directory is simple and easy to use: Just select whichever of the two search methods suits you best; then select from the geographical locations on the menu's to display the hotels located in your chosen destination. If you don't know in which part of the UK your chosen destination is located, select a search method followed by "I don't know!" for a complete listing of all locations in the directory. To start the search process again, simply re-select either of the Search options at any time. The "Back" option of your browser can of course be used for an instant return to your previous menu or page. If a hotel is part of a group which has a central reservations system, all the necessary contact information can be found by selecting "Central Reservations Information". everybody.co.uk does not operate a reservations or booking system of its own.

WHICH HOTELS ARE LISTED BY everybody.co.uk?

Only hotels which have accommodation regarded as being accessible to everybody including people with disabilities, or hotels which have the ability to provide such rooms at short notice, are eligible for entry in EVERYBODY'S hotel directory. Except in rare inner city cases where a hotel may not have such facilities, people with disabilities are also able to access the restaurant or dining facilities of all hotels listed - where a hotel has more than 1 restaurant, at least 1 is accessible. Where any doubt has existed as to eligibility, the hotel concerned has been omitted. As previously stated, hotels intended exclusively for the use of disabled people, and/or owned by disability related organisations have also been deliberately omitted.

With the exception of airline central reservation numbers and a few links, everybody.co.uk does not currently offer information for locations outside the UK.

It is stressed that this directory contains many hotels (belonging to groups) that have always been accessible, but have never been denoted as such in the groups' own directories due to differences in the eligibility criteria applied. Where this is the case, you are assured that the hotel has been vetted prior to entry.

Some hotel groups were contacted that don't have any hotels that qualify for inclusion within this directory. They have therefore been omitted.

WHAT IS EVERYBODY'S AIRLINE DIRECTORY?

EVERYBODY'S Airline Directory is thought to be the first disability-friendly world airline directory that anyone could use to exist in the UK, and possibly worldwide. To use it, simply select the airline you hope to fly with from the Airlines menu. Whilst the information relating to most of the airlines listed is applicable to users worldwide, the telephone numbers given are currently for the UK, USA, Canada or Australia only. Users outside these countries are advised to please contact their chosen airline's nearest local office to progress enquiries or make a reservation.

WHO AND WHAT ARE "ASSOCIATES"?

Associates are all the places or services listed in this directory which are not hotels or airlines. An Associate could be any business or organisation, but are most likely to be other places or providers of services that are of particular interest to travellers, such as B&Bs, guest houses, restaurants, tourist attractions or useful local amenities. Associates have usually paid to be listed here, but do so having given assurances to the Editor that the place(s) or service(s) they list are genuinely disability-friendly. For further details on how to become an Associate, please see Advertise/Be Listed.

WHY SHOULD I RELY ON THE CONTENT OF everybody.co.uk OVER AND ABOVE OTHER SIMILAR DIRECTORIES?

The hotel and airline listings in everybody.co.uk has been researched and compiled by accessibility to goods and services specialist, Jonathan Kaye, who having acted as a consultant to a major UK travel agency chain is well aware of the difficulties faced by travellers, and particularly those who have a disability. A wheelchair user, he can also give businesses specialist advice on the provision of access to goods and services in accordance with Part III of the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 (in affect since October 1999), having previously helped to establish the Government's advisory service (DARAS) on these issues.

Unlike other directories which are likely to have been compiled on the basis of returning a questionnaire, every hotel or airline listed here has been contacted in person on a "mystery shopper" basis prior to entry. You can be certain too that no hotel or airline has entered into any financial or other agreement to be listed here. Although the directory is run on a commercial basis and a hotel or hotel group may pay to have their listing enhanced by way of a description and/or photo, a hotel's basic listing is absolutely FREE! In fact, it is for this reason that everybody.co.uk is thought to be the first UK disability friendly hotel directory to have contacted hotels from every known major hotel group operating in the UK, along with as many as possible which are independently owned, during its compilation. everybody.co.uk is independent of any disability organisation or any of the hotels, airlines or other services listed herein. However, everybody.co.uk reserves the right to enter into commission or other financially based agreements with any party already listed herein for the purpose of enhanced promotion of their products or services on this site. As its name implies, this directory is non disability specific and is aimed at everyone, be they disabled or not!

All this, it is believed, makes this directory not only the most geographically comprehensive known disability friendly UK hotel directory to have been compiled by a person with a disability, but also it is hoped, one of the most accurate.

DISCLAIMER

Every effort has been made to ensure that all information contained in this directory was correct and up-to-date at the time of posting to this site. All hotel information was provided directly by either hotel groups or the individual hotels themselves in good faith. All airline information was similarly provided directly by the airlines themselves in good faith. Any views or opinions expressed within the forum of this site are those of their respective contributors alone, and are not necessarily shared by, nor do they necessarily reflect those of the Editor. This site aims to be family friendly; the Editor therefore reserves to omit from the forum any contribution deemed to violate such a policy in any way. The Editor accepts no liability whatsoever appertaining to the accuracy or otherwise of information contained in any part of this directory.

RATINGS POLICY

The Editor has made no attempt to rate the hotels listed in this directory himself. Nor does he make any recommendations as to which may be the best or worst hotels, although he does of course have his personal favourites - particularly where the cuisine is concerned! All ratings are indicative only and should not be solely relied upon for the purpose of assessing the level of a hotel's facilities for disabled people or in any other respect. All hotels listed advise users of this directory to contact them prior to booking to ensure that the hotel can meet the user's specific disability related and other requirements.

A mixture of the standard mainstream star and crown rating systems has been used in this directory because the Tourism For All rating system, used to assess disabled accessibility of hotels, does not take into account the quality of a hotel's facilities in general. See Pricing/Ratings Explained for further information (this will be displayed in a separate window for your convenience).

Attempts have been and are being made to adopt a common disability facilities rating system for hotels across Europe. The Editor expresses his full support for such a system, believing it will greatly benefit both disabled travellers and the travel industry, whilst also suggesting that such a system should consist of easily definable and understandable grades. This would enable hoteliers to simply but accurately apply the system themselves, thus reducing implementation time and the need for inspections.

GEOGRAPHY

It should be noted that in recent years, various changes have to made to both County names and boundaries, particularly in Scotland and Wales. Despite this, it is quite common for references to be made to a Counties' previous name! Locations listed on everybody.co.uk have been checked for accuracy against the official Collins 1999 map of the UK prior to publication of this site. To clarify any further confusion, for example, both Ross-shire and Inverness-shire have now become parts of Highland.

HOTEL OWNERSHIP

Where no hotel group is indicated, either the group to which the particular hotel belongs is unknown, or the hotel is independently and/or privately owned.

CLOSURES & REDUCED SERVICES.

Any known information relating to periods when a particular hotel is closed annually, or has reduced service provision are indicated in brackets next to the name of the hotel concerned.

It should also be noted that some hotels close or operate reduced services over and around the Christmas, New Year and Easter holiday periods. These arrangements are highly variable. You are therefore advised to check any arrangements for this period with the hotel of your choice prior to booking.

CALLING OR FAXING HOTELS FROM OUTSIDE THE UK

When calling the UK from abroad, the first 0 of any given number should be dropped and 44 prefixed to the number.
e.g. telephone number 01234 123456 becomes: Your international access code +44 1234 123456

It should be noted that this site has now been updated to incorporate phone code changes to certain UK numbers.

MINICOM (TTD/TEXT) PHONE NUMBERS

Despite the Editor's every best endeavour to include telephone numbers for Minicom users in this directory, regrettably he is unaware of any hotel contacted that had minicom facilities. There was however a fair degree of awareness of the BT Typetalk system - Call 0151 709 9494 between 9am-5pm, Monday-Friday (in the UK) or your International Operator for assistance. Apologies.

GUIDE DOGS

It may be assumed that guide dogs can accompany their owners into all hotels listed in this directory.

ADDITIONS & UPDATES.

Every effort is made to try to ensure that new hotels are added to the directory as soon as possible once they open or are known about. However, as with any corrections that may become necessary over time, the Editor is primarily dependent on hoteliers for this information. Therefore, if you have any information relating to suitable new or other existing hotels, or the fact that a hotel is being modified to meet the entry criteria of everybody.co.uk, please get in contact via the Be listed page. Your assistance and comments are very much welcomed and appreciated! Any proposed new entries will be subject to vetting prior to being listed.

If your browser does not support forms, please send a message to listing@everybody.co.uk

WHAT IS "allgohere"?

allgohere is the name of the new version of this directory which is now available to users of internet enabled (WAP) mobile telephones, via the BT Genie Internet portal, its content being taken directly from this site. The name is derived from "All Go!", the title of the printed book (ISBN: 0-9529323-9-3) that was the forerunner to the everybody.co.uk web site. Published in October 1998 in association with MasterCard, the book lists over 1000 of the hotels you will find on this site. As well as being available through major UK bookshops, the book has also become the first known disability related hotel directory to be distributed by the Association of British Travel Agents to their members. The publication also contains a foreword by television personality Jill Dando which sadly turned out to be one of the last she wrote. However, it is known that "All Go!" was important to Jill, and hoped that by way of its incorporation into this site the memory of her considerable contribution to traveling in general will live on. It is possible that there will be further printed editions of this directory published in due course.

everybody.co.uk regrets that we have no control over the distribution or availability of "All Go!". However, a limited number of copies are available from us on request at the reduced price of £4.50 (including postage and packing).
